This Black Onyx Mala is made by a local artisan in Chiang Mai, Thailand. At Monk Mala, we work with local artisans and suppliers in Thailand to create our Mala beads. Supporting these small local businesses is an important part of what we do.
The Mala is assembled using 108 Black Onyx beads, a silver Guru bead, and a cotton tassel, then prepared for its Monk blessing.
How to Use Black Onyx Buddhist Prayer Beads
Because this Mala is listed in both our Meditation Mala and Protection Mala collections, it can be used either for meditation and prayer or worn as a personal protection Mala.
For Japa meditation, hold the Mala comfortably and use your fingers to move from one bead to the next while repeating your chosen mantra or prayer. Complete one repetition for each bead until you have passed through all 108 beads.
When you reach the Guru bead, you have completed one full cycle. Many practitioners pause at this point rather than crossing over the Guru bead, turning the Mala around if they wish to begin another cycle.
